WORLD RECORDS
Harold Bull and Stripduster took three world records from the previous holder C. Arbarth in his Fiat Arbarth, all at RAF Elvington, Yorkshire. To our knowledge, they have never been broken again, so Harold still holds the three world records for standing quarter mile, standing 500 meters and standing kilometer
16/10/1966 Standing quarter mile 12.85 seconds 70 mph (This was the average time recorded over two passes, but the real time was a tad over 9 seconds with a speed of 136 mph)
18/10/1969 Standing Kilometer - average speed over two passes 21.805 seconds with a speed of 84.22 mph,
real speed 168mph (unfortunately the certificate for this record has gone missing
19/10/1969 Standing 500 meters - average speed over two passes 13.28 seconds with a speed of 84.22 mph,
real speed - 185 mph (again this certificate is missing, but the certificate below shows when Harold took the world record the first time on 16th Oct 1966, only to smash it again by another two seconds!!)
Santa Pod's records for competition machines listed in Drag Racing News Feb 1971
'F' class - H.Bull - B.M.C. - 9.75 seconds - 134.95 mph - 21.3.71
Contrary to what some believe, Harold never crashed Stripduster. He did once clip the barrier which caused the magnesium wheels to spark a bit but carried on with the race without further mishap. Also Harold did not buy Houndog, but was asked to drive it which he accepted. Unfortunately, due to an all important oil change not being done by the mechanics, the oil was polluted with fuel causing an explosion in the sump which blew the gaskets, causing oil to hit the visor of Harolds crash helmet. He and Houndog hit the barrier at approximately 180 mph, this, inevitably was the last time he raced a dragster.
