STRIPDUSTER

 

Stripduster was built as they say ‘on a shoestring’ for the grand sum of £35.00 Harold purchased the original Morris Minor 1000, engine for £1.00 from a small garage just up the road. Originally it was 948cc but it was bored out to 998cc.The Guy said it was in his way and accepted a pound for Harold to take it away!!!  Bargain. 

Cylinder Heads – Austin A30, widened ports, gas flowed, Cooper S & G Sprite valve springs. Autolite AG701 spark plugs 8.5:1 compression ratio. Triple 1 Ό” bore stub exhausts 6 ½” long.

Carburettors/Injectors – 2” SU Carb or twin 1 Ό” Wal Phillips injectors, later Harold built his own injector. 

Blower – Ian Godfrey (Rootes type) ex air-military cabin blower, overdriven by 1:1. ½  

Fuel Pump – 100 p.s.i. rotary pump designed and built by Harold, run from front of blower with a gear reduction to turn it at crankshaft speed 

Fuel Tank – Originally a longitudinally mounted, cylindrical lawn mower petrol tank, later replaced by a hand made version ! 

Transmission- Three speed Morris 8 (circa 1936) with first and reverse gears removed. Later replaced with a direct drive 

Clutch – Originally 7” Borg & Beck with uprated springs and competition linings – later replaced with a hand made twin plate clutch

 

Rear Axle – Solid mounted Morris Minor 1000 4.55:1 ratio, narrowed to achieve a 30” track 

Front Axle – Dropped tube type, chromed and mounted on leading links from a Morris Minor torsion bar, 41” track. Austin Seven stub axles

Chassis – Hand made from 1” dia 16 s.w.g. mild steel tube, designed and constructed by Harold. The original wheelbase of Stripduster was 84” but was later lengthened to 104” and again later to 130” 

Brakes – Morris Minor 1000 

Front Wheels/Tyres – 12” R.S.W. cycle rims, spoked to hubs made by Harold. 2” section white rubber tyres, painted black !! 

Rear Wheels/Tyres – Ford 105E wheel rims, reversed to give a deeper reveal, later changed for Magnesium wheels (purchased job lot from Cooper Cars) 5.20” treaded tyres 

Body – Aluminium with spats each side of the engine and upswept tail to house the parachute 

Paintwork – Opalescent Silver Blue, then Blue Metalflake then Firebrand Metalflake
