ABOUT HAROLD

Harold Bull, born Shepherds Bush, London on 4^th September 1924

                                      Been married to Ethel for almost 60 years now                                           

6 Sons – 1 Daughter – 12 Grandchildren – 4 Gt Grandchildren

Self taught Engineer and Tool Maker

After their 7th child, born in ’64 arrived, it was suggested that Harold got a new hobby !!!  There were to be NO MORE KIDS, they couldn’t afford a telly so Harold started buying American Hot Rod magazines and was totally smitten. He heard the Americans were bringing some dragsters over to Blackbushe Airfield in ’64, went along for the day and the rest as they say ‘ Is History’ 

The original Stripduster was built in 1965 as a hobby car, more for fun than a serious race car…Her first outing was at Chobham Common, Surrey, where there was a strip of unused concrete. She was taken over there for her maiden run. Consequently someone complained about the noise and the police arrived, only to find the car much more interesting than arresting Harold for trespassing !! The police told him to ‘move along’ and not come back – so he had to find somewhere else to run Stripduster. 

King Harold as he is affectionately known at Santa Pod holds the honour of  running the VERY FIRST PASS at Santa Pod at the Easter meeting on 11^th April 1966. 

Harold is now at the young age of 83, still driving, still building working ¼ scale model engines on his lathe in the garden shed, as well as model planes and helicopters (photographs of his engines can be seen on 1/4 scale model engines page, and the engines running on their own pages)
